Economics Essay

In less than thirty-five years, the population of Africa will grow exponentially and represent over 25% of the worlds population. How is this African Economies and demographic change going to impact Africa and the rest of the world, socially, politically, economically, and culturally? Are Africans going to be the owners of their own destiny or will they still be dependent on foreign aid?

For your final essay, you will be required to write a 10-12 page double spaced paper
with a works cited page (in MLA format) with at least 6 sources. Papers will be graded based on your ability to develop an argument that is substantiated by evidence from both the assigned readings and independent research.

You will choose one of the two below essay topics; both of which ask you to compare and contrast development in different countries in Africa. To answer one of these questions, I want you to propose original/ innovative ideas and hypotheses (as searchers and not planners as in the metaphor of William Easterly) and perform predictive data analysis to explain underlying phenomena (See Rob OReillys links and our required readings).

Option 1- Choose at least two countries in Africa and compare/ contrast at least three individual aspects of the economy using quantitative data: income disparities, labor and gender inequality, other welfare indicators, etc. What factors led to the differing rates of economic growth and development? Make sure to account for confounding variables that contextualize your findings.

Option 2- Explain why English-speaking countries have experienced higher sustained economic growth when compared to non-English speaking countries in Africa and the Middle East. You can choose Spanish, French, Portuguese, or Arabic speaking countries or regions. Feel free to include any aspect of the economy, trade, agribusiness, or political factors, such as investor confidence/ stability, in order to explain how countries deal with their post-colonial conditions.
