Child Homelessness

Homelessness has been experienced in the USA since the 1870s. There was an increase in the number of homeless people after the great depression of the 1930s. The cost of housing in the U.S. has made it difficult for many working-class citizens to afford homes, leading to homelessness in the country. Many children do not have access to permanent residences in the country. About 1.25 million children are classified as homeless in the U.S., which is 3 percent of all the children in the country (Morton et al., 2018). Low-income families are affected by homelessness more that the relatively affluent ones and the state of homelessness is higher among racial minorities and immigrant populations. Among the poor, about 10 percent of the children are homeless. In some cases, children are in temporary states of homelessness, depending on factors such as temporary unemployment. Currently, about 58, 000 families are affected by different states of homelessness in the country (Unites States Interagency Council on Homelessness, 2018). Homelessness among children affects their life in major ways, as lack of a permanent residence may also indicate that the children do not have responsible adults. The problem is made more glaring when one considers that lack of housing means the children do not have access to many other basic amenities that the home provides, such as clean water and food.  Therefore, child homelessness is a major issue in the country and needs urgent intervention measures by the government.

Homelessness affects families and children in many ways. The children, who sometimes spend the night in the open, are exposed to physical and mental health risks, mainly due to the exposure to cold and consumption of unhygienic food. Also, the children are exposed to violence on the streets. Statistics show that more than 50 percent of the children who live on the streets of New York have faced violence, either from other homeless people, the police, or ordinary people suspecting them of crime (Morton et al., 2018). Also, the children are exposed to substance abuse and early pregnancies, which increases the financial burden of the families.

Several programs have been begun to help homeless children in the U.S. Nongovernmental and faith-based organizations run humanitarian programs aimed at making the lives of the homeless children and youth better. For example, there are shelters that provide temporary accommodation during the night for the homeless in New York, which is also replicated in many cities in the country (Unites States Interagency Council on Homelessness, 2018). However, many of these programs have little impact on the state of homelessness in the U.S. While the temporary accommodation and meals provide humanitarian relief to the homeless people, they do not offer long term solutions to the homelessness among children in the country.  Also, research reveals the little direct impact of the shelters on the health of homeless children. Further, the children are exposed to the risks of violence, sexual abuse, and substance abuse when they return to the streets during the day. Thus, there is a need for a long time, sustainable interventions to help the homeless. For example, any efforts to provide shelter should not be limited to the night, but full time so that the children are adequately protected. Also, the intervention should address the root causes of the state of homelessness, such as unemployment and poverty, so that the children do not end up in the streets in the first place.
