If I Was a Man for a Week

If I were a man for a week, I would make every day of the week count by performing all my roles without fail. Today’s society has high expectations for a man who has many responsibilities he is expected to fulfill, and if he fails, he ends as a disappointment to his family and the society. As for the role towards their families, a man is expected to be a provider, a protector, a leader, a teacher, and a husband to his wife. However, most men do not uphold to these expectations, since most of them spend too much time at work and forget to take care of their families (Griffin, Parpart, and Zalewski 3). The responsibility of being a man comes with being able to uphold religious values. A man should also ensure a good working relationship with his colleagues to maintain a good relationship. To do this, he has to avoid getting involved in compromising situations and do his work to completion.

If I were a man for one week, on the first day, I would wake up as early as possible and pray together with my wife for the day ahead. I would then help my wife make breakfast as she prepares the kids for school. After that, we would get prepared, and then I would drive all of them, dropping the kids first to school then my wife at work and finally head to my workplace. There, I would work on my schedule, doing everything as per the work regulations, not leaving anything to chance. At lunchtime, I would surprise my wife by taking lunch for her to her office, where we would both have lunch, and then I head back to my office. If I were a man for a week, I would make every day of the week count by performing all my roles without fail. I would handle my work carefully, but be time conscious so that I do not carry forward the day’s work to the next day. In the evening, I would pick up my wife and children and head back to the house. I would then help my children handle their homework as my wife takes care of dinner, after which all of us would sit for the meal. Before starting the meal, I would ensure that the meal is prayed for since I would have taught my children about religion and ensured they lived up to the standards. During dinner, I would ask everyone about how their day was and offer moral, encouragement, and emotional support where necessary. After dinner, we would hold a family prayer, led by one of my children, then put them to bed. My wife and I would then help each other do the dishes, while at the same time, discussing the development and the future of our kids. I would ensure all the doors are locked, and the alarm system is set before going to sleep.

If I were a man for one week, on day two, we would all wake up very early to ensure we do not delay for our various destinations. We would pray then I would prepare the children while my wife makes breakfast. I would guarantee I know the day’s program before we leave the house. I would then drop my kids to school and my wife to work before heading to my workplace. At work, I would ensure I check on my colleagues to know if they are fine. I would then start my day’s work and ensure I do my job very carefully to avoid any faults. At lunch break, I would go to my children’s school to follow up on their performance, after which I would return to the office and finish the day’s assignment. There being school function at my children’s school the next day, I would go and ask my employer for permission not to report to work. I would go and pick up my family then head home, where I would help my wife prepare the kids for a sleepover. We would pray before leaving the house, after which, we would escort them to their friend’s house. There being just the two of us left in the house, I would take my wife out for a surprise dinner, return home, where we would prepare the next day’s schedule, after which we would pray, and sleep.

On day three, I would wake up early together with my wife; we would pray, and I would go to pick up the kids as she prepares breakfast. We would then prepare the kids, and ourselves then leave for the school function. At school, I would ensure I follow up on every detail of the function, so that I do not miss anything. I would also observe the way my kids interact with their classmates, and if one of them is being bullied, I would ensure I find out the thing that is subjecting him to bully. If it is related to social class, I would talk to the teachers to ensure the bullying stops. On getting back home, I would sit my kid down and teach him about social classes and why he should be contented with what he has I would also ensure I listen to my other kid and handle her issues appropriately. Given that on that particular day we would be having too much free time, I would engage my family in a Bible study session, pray, and help my wife prepare dinner as the kids read. We would all sit down for our daily meal and before that, pray. Over the table, I would engage my family in conversations, on what they are comfortable with and ask whether there is anything that they need. We would then pray for the night, after which I would help do the dishes as my wife puts the children to bed. I would ensure all the doors are locked, and the alarm is set for protection purposes. We would then head for sleep, during which we would discuss the achievements of the day.

If I were a man for one week, on day four, we would wake up early, as usual, I would make sure we pray, after which my wife and I would help each other to prepare for the day. I would then drop my kids to school and my wife to her office before heading to mine. I would work hard, given that the previous day I was absent, and I would ensure I reduce the workload that had accumulated. I would skip lunch break to ensure I handle much of the workload and at the same time, get home in time for my family. At the end of the day, I would pick up my family and head home. At home, I would help my children with the assignments as my wife cooks. We would then pray and have the meal, during which we would share our day’s experiences (Thurston et al. 201). I would offer support, guidance and encouragement where needed. After supper, we would then hold a prayer and put our kids to bed. I would help my wife do the dishes since she complained of being tired, and then I would set the security system before we go to sleep.

On day five, as usual, we would wake up early, pray then prepare for the day, since I would hang out with my friends after work, I informed my wife to avoid unnecessary conflict. I would drop my family to their various destinations before heading to mine. I would then commit myself to work and during lunch break, have lunch with some of my colleagues. In the afternoon, I would ensure I finish all the workload for the week to avoid carrying on the weeks work to next week. I would then pick my family and drop them home, where I would spend some time with them before heading out with my friends. I would then spend time with them, discussing their week’s events and developments over drinks. I would then head home early enough to ensure I do not miss dinner and prayers with my family. After these, we would put the children to bed, do the dishes then I would check the security system before we go to sleep.

On the sixth day, we would wake up at 7.00 am since everyone would be relaxing from the week’s events. We would pray for the day, and then prepare breakfast as my wife does laundry. We would have a family breakfast, after which I would take my family out. We would spend our day doing various things that would help the family bond even more. I would then take them out for shopping and head back home. In case the men members of my church would be having an event on this day, I would make sure I attend so that I do not miss anything important. I would return home and prepare dinner for the family, giving my wife time to relax after which, we would pray, eat and put my kids to bed. Incase my wife opts to do the dishes; I would prepare a hot bath for her, after which we have some chats before going to bed.

If I were a man for one week, on the seventh day, I would wake my family early to prepare for church. We would pray, get prepared then I would ensure everyone has a Bible and a notebook before we leave for church. At church, I would expect my family to follow the teachings since they would apply it in their daily lives. I would then ensure that after church, every member of my family gathers in their appropriate groups for weekly guidance. We would then head home, where I would help in preparations for the week and dinner. We would then have dinner and hold a family prayer. I would do the dishes as my wife puts the kids to bed then check the doors and windows before we sleep for the night.

In conclusion, if I were a man for one week, I would ensure I perform all the duties that a man is supposed to do, including completing tasks assigned at work, ensuring that the family is comfortable, impart words of wisdom and knowledge on my children, interacting with work colleagues, and male members of my church. I understand that these are the expectations the society has for us men and I would gladly take the challenge to ensure that I abide by those conditions.
