Is it better to read and write in the digital medium or the old school way using pencil/pen and paper

General Information
In Kat Ascharya’s article, “Why Reading On Paper, Scientifically, Makes Us Happier People,” she presents some real-life situations that illustrate the pros and cons of digital vs. paper reading and writing. This is the issue that you are considering as you read and write.

Topic Question
Is it better to read and write in the digital medium or the old school way using a pencil/pen and paper?
• Answer this question and explain your thoughts without using “I” or “I think” or “I believe” too much if you can. Try to be on the outside looking at the question. Don’t put yourself into the discussion.
• Write an essay of 900 words which has a minimum of 5 paragraphs [introduction, body, and conclusion] which contain at least 8-10 sentences per paragraph.
• Provide supporting ideas from the article and your own pre-existing knowledge or experience with the topic.
• If you know how to, provide in-text citations for examples from the reading used to support your discussion. These will be in parentheses.

For in-text citations:
• Remember that this article has an author, so you are citing the author’s name.
• To cite the author, you would put the author’s last name in parentheses like this: (Ascharya).
• There are no page numbers because the article posted in Canvas does not have any page numbers, so do not add any page numbers.

Do not use any additional outside sources from the web or any databases or any other articles. This will count against your score.

MLA Format for This Essay
• Format your essay using the MLA guidelines which are provided in the video below.
• If your essay is not formatted according to these guidelines, it will either be marked down or it may not be read. For example, if your essay is single-spaced, it will not be read.

Document Format Saved As
Write your essay and save it either as a .docx or a .pdf.
Then upload it to Canvas.
DO NOT upload Google Docs or Google Pages or any other format because they often can’t be opened.
The overall score is broken down into categories in the grading rubric below.
